In November 2004, the Newton Food Share opened for business in the old hospital on Main Street. There was a vision for a food pantry that would meet the needs of the people of the extended Newton community. We have grown from a few shelves of food to a good-sized grocery store with really good prices (free!). We now serve an average of 300 families representing 800 people per month. Families of 1 or 2 people receive the following grocery items: meat, 8-9 canned vegetables and/or fruit, cereal or oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, dry beans, rice, peanut butter, and ramen noodles. Larger families receive extra meat and other items depending on the size of the family. The majority of the food is procured through the Southeast Texas Food Bank and our local Brookshire Brothers grocery store. Local food drives have provided extra food for our distributions.
Our team is made of local community members with a passion for community service.
We partner with a variety of organizations and businesses in our community to provide a variety of healthy food including fruits, vegetables, and meat.
